Open-Toed Options to Soothe Aching Arches

Open toes sandals with two buckles

Picture this: it’s a perfect day for the beach and you take your first steps onto the sandy shoreline, thinking of all the fun things you plan on doing, and…OUCH!

Nothing ruins a beach day like aching arches or chronic heel pain, and unfortunately, reaching for your favorite pair of flip-flops might make things worse. At Southern Maryland Foot & Ankle, we often see patients struggling with unsupportive summer footwear, so the following guide provides warnings, info, and recommendations that combine a firm foundation AND comfort.

The Flip-Flop Fallacy

Thin, flat flip-flops may seem comfortable because they don’t restrict your feet; however, their lack of structure is precisely the problem for many people, contributing to:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Ball-of-foot pain (Metatarsalgia)
  • Knee, hip, and back pain related to poor foot mechanics.

The problem can usually be traced to three core concerns:

  1. No Arch Support! Standard flip-flops offer zero support for your arches, allowing your foot to flatten excessively (overpronate). This strains the plantar fascia and other structures.
  2. No Heel Control! They lack a heel cup to stabilize your foot, contributing to instability.
  3. Toe Gripping! Your toes must grip the sandal to keep it on, leading to muscle fatigue and potential toe problems like hammertoes.

Bottom line? While okay for very short periods (like at the pool), flat, flimsy flip-flops are NOT designed for extended wear, especially if you need arch support!

Supportive Sandals: What Your Arches Really Need

You can enjoy open-toed comfort without sacrificing support! Look for sandals and other open-toed styles that incorporate these podiatrist-approved features:

Contoured Arch Support:

This is non-negotiable if you have arch pain. Look for a visible, built-in arch contour in the footbed. This helps distribute pressure evenly and prevents excessive strain on the plantar fascia. Consider brands like Archies that offer orthotic support for optimal foot posture to aid in whole body alignment. Archies are available for sale in our offices.

Deep Heel Cup:

A well-defined heel cup cradles your heel, providing stability and helping to control excess foot motion (like overpronation).

Adequate Cushioning:

The footbed should offer sufficient cushioning to absorb shock, particularly important when walking on hard surfaces like sidewalks or pavement.

Secure Straps:

Look for straps that hold your foot securely onto the footbed. Adjustable straps (like Velcro or buckles) allow for a more customized and secure fit, preventing your foot from sliding and eliminating the need for toe-gripping. Birkenstock sandals are ideal for this.

Supportive slides with contoured footbeds or clogs with backstraps can also be excellent open-toed choices, too.
