Additional Podiatry Services

Achilles Tendon

Achilles injuries, such as Achilles tendonitis or ruptures, are common in athletes and active individuals. Achilles tendonitis typically results from overuse or strain, causing pain and swelling in the back of the heel. A rupture, which is a more severe injury, involves a complete tear of the tendon and often requires surgical intervention and extended rehabilitation. Proper warm-up, stretching, and gradual increase in activity levels can help prevent these injuries.

Ankle Instability

Ankle instability occurs when the ligaments and muscles surrounding the ankle are unable to provide adequate support, often due to repeated sprains or trauma. This condition can lead to frequent rolling or twisting of the ankle, causing discomfort and increasing the risk of further injury. Symptoms include a feeling of weakness or giving way in the ankle, and it can impact daily activities and athletic performance. Treatment often involves physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve proprioception, as well as using supportive devices like braces or orthotics.

Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprain occurs when one or more ligaments in the ankle are injured, typically on the outside of the joint. Ligaments are flexible bands of tissue that connect bones and help stabilize joints. In the ankle, they play a crucial role in maintaining stability by limiting excessive side-to-side movement.

Arthritic Foot & Ankle Care

Arthritic foot and ankle care focuses on managing pain and maintaining mobility. Key strategies include using supportive footwear, engaging in low-impact exercises to strengthen muscles and improve joint flexibility, and applying heat or cold to reduce inflammation. Medications and physical therapy can also be beneficial, and in some cases, assistive devices or orthotics may help alleviate discomfort and enhance function.

Athletes Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common, long-lasting infection caused by different types of fungi. It’s often picked up in places where people tend to walk barefoot, like public showers or swimming pools.

Bunions

Bunions happen when the big toe joint gets out of alignment, leading to swelling and tenderness. This causes the big toe to lean outward, while the second joint starts to shift toward the other toes.

Calluses

A callus forms when the skin on your foot thickens due to pressure and repeated rubbing, often from shoes or socks. It’s your skin’s way of protecting itself, but calluses can vary in size and sometimes become painful. Fortunately, there are several treatments available to relieve discomfort and help manage calluses.

Common Foot Injuries

Common foot injuries include sprains, fractures, and tendonitis. Sprains result from overstretched ligaments, often causing pain and swelling. Fractures involve broken bones, which may lead to severe pain and difficulty moving the foot. Tendonitis occurs from overuse, leading to inflammation and discomfort. Proper rest, treatment, and protective footwear can help in recovery and prevention.

Corns

Corns and calluses are thick layers of dead skin that form to protect against repeated friction. Corns typically appear on the toes, while calluses develop on the soles of the feet, often due to rubbing against shoes or bony areas.

Crush Injuries

Corns and calluses are thick layers of dead skin that form to protect against repeated friction. Corns typically appear on the toes, while calluses develop on the soles of the feet, often due to rubbing against shoes or bony areas.

Flat Feet

Flat feet are quite common, especially in infants and toddlers, as their arches haven’t developed yet. It’s completely normal at that stage. As children grow, their arches usually form, and by adulthood, most people have a typical arch.

Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is an infection that causes the nails to become discolored, thick, and brittle. It’s often picked up in warm, damp places like locker rooms or by wearing tight shoes.

Geriatric Foot Pain

Geriatric foot pain is often caused by conditions like arthritis, plantar fasciitis, or bunions. As people age, changes in foot structure and decreased cushioning can exacerbate discomfort. Managing this pain involves wearing supportive shoes, using orthotics, and engaging in gentle exercises to maintain mobility. Consulting a healthcare provider for personalized treatment can also help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.

Hammertoes

Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery.

Heel Pain

Heel pain is most often caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition that is sometimes also called heel spur syndrome when a spur is present. Heel pain may also be due to other causes, such as a stress fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, nerve irritation, or, rarely, a cyst.

Heel Spurs

Plantar fasciitis (or heel pain) is commonly traced to an inflammation on the bottom of the foot. Our practice can evaluate arch pain, and may prescribe customized shoe inserts called orthoses to help alleviate the pain.

Ingrown Toenails

When a toenail is ingrown, it is curved and grows into the skin, usually at the nail borders (the sides of the nail). This “digging in” of the nail irritates the skin, often creating pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the toe.

Warts

A wart is a small growth on the skin that develops when the skin is infected by a virus. Warts can develop anywhere on the foot, but typically they appear on the bottom (plantar side) of the foot. Plantar warts most commonly occur in children, adolescents, and the elderly.
