Saving Limbs, Saving Lives: How Podiatrists Improve Outcomes for Those with Diabetes

Foot examination

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to focus on managing this complex condition. A simple foot problem can escalate into a life-altering event for people with diabetes. Studies show that regular, specialized care from a podiatrist can dramatically reduce the risk of diabetic complications.

Detecting Danger Before It Strikes

We use specialized, non-invasive tools to get a clear picture of your neurovascular health during a comprehensive diabetic foot exam. These may include:

  • Sudoscan: This non-invasive test can measure and monitor the progression of your health, including small nerves, an indicator of developing diabetes complications.
  • The Sensation Test (Monofilament Exam): We use a soft nylon fiber to touch specific points on your feet. The goal is to determine if nerves are properly sending signals to your brain, identifying areas at high risk for unnoticed injuries.
  • The Circulation Check (Ankle-Brachial Index – ABI): How strong is the blood flow to your feet? The ABI test gives us the answer by comparing the blood pressure in your ankle to that in your arm.
  • Structural Evaluation: We analyze foot structure and gait to identify “hot spots.”
    • Deformities like bunions or hammertoes can create areas of extreme pressure that are prone to breaking down into ulcers.

How Podiatrists Make a Difference

Major independent studies have confirmed the critical role podiatrists play in diabetic care, particularly when it comes to reduced amputation risk.

A Personalized Plan = Superior Outcomes

Identifying risks is only half the battle. Based on your exam, we can provide:

  • Custom Orthotics & Specialized Footwear: Unlike a store-bought insert, a prescription orthotic is engineered to redistribute pressure away from high-risk areas, preventing calluses and sores from forming in the first place.
    • Our In-Office Shoe Store can provide personalized diabetic footwear at all three of our clinic locations!
  • Advanced Wound Care: If a wound does develop, we have the tools to manage it effectively. This includes specialized dressings and advanced therapies to promote healing and prevent infection.
  • Routine, Professional Nail and Skin Care: For patients with vision problems or difficulty reaching their feet, trying to trim thick or ingrown toenails at home can be dangerous. We perform essential nail care while preventing infections or cuts.
